Christopher Michlig @ Hyde Park Art Center, Chicago

May 12 - September 15, 2013

Abstracting the Seam

The group exhibition Abstracting the Seam surveys the ways in needleworking strategies permeate the painting, collage, video, textile, and installation art by seven contemporary artists whose work addresses the kaleidoscopic urban experience. Billboards, street posters, telephone poles, concrete mixers and burned out factories are some of the environmental imagery and content that weaves itself into the artwork presented in Abstracting the Seam.

easy does it

Opening Reception:
Thursday, February 1, 7 - 9pm

The first in an evolving trilogy of exhibitions curated by Kevin Hunt examining the complexity inherent within the simplest of actions.
Bringing together works by Carwyn Evans, Fiona Curran, Hannah James, Jo Addison, Jo Coupe, Leo Fitzmaurice, Littlewhitehead, Sean Edwards, Tom Godfrey and Tom Ireland alongside Hunt’s own, these exhibitions seek to question the highly crafted time consuming pursuit of making art via a conglomeration of objects and artefacts created with ease. Presenting a world where the seemingly trivial can be proven to produce powerful and surprisingly sublime effects.

Marine Contemporary is pleased to announce Akina Cox's participation in the NADA Miami Beach 2012 video program, Under My Skin, curated by Grela Orihuela.

Cox’s haunting video, Burning Witch, shows the slow demise of a sculpture that loosely resembles the female form being burned at the stake and gradually disintegrating into the California desert.

UNDER MY SKIN

A phrase lifted from the lyrical echoes of Sinatra in the very same spot where the Ratpack threw back the Jack in Miami, at the Deauville Beach Resort. The impetuous ghosts of the original jetset commingle with an international medley of video artists in a program curated by Grela Orihuela for NADA Miami Beach 2012. Under My Skin is an exhibition of body and soul, its characters and conceptions insinuating their yearning and conflicting passions into the cool, dark confines of this historic venue's iconic lounge.

The program will run continuously during fair hours.

Fair hours:

Open to the Public

Kelly Barrie at Marine Contemporary
February 2, 2012

We are very pleased to announce the gallery is now representing Kelly Barrie.

Kelly Barrie (b.1973, London, England) received an MFA
from
California Institute of the Arts, New Hall, California in 1997
and
completed the Whitney Museum Independent Study
Program in
1998. Barrie's work, a material hybrid of photography
and
drawing, recreates forgotten historical events, by literally
walking
them out of his head through a performative floor drawing
using
his feet and white photo luminescent pigment powder on
black
seamless paper. The light sensitive drawing is then
documented
in small sections using a 35mm camera, digitally
collaged back
together, and outputted to scale as one seamless
photographic print. In spring of 2010 his works were featured in
A Word Like
Tomorrow Wears Things Out, at Sikkema Jenkins &
Co, NY and
reviewed in the March edition of The New Yorker. In
winter 2010
Barrie completed a solo exhibition at LAXART
entitled Negative
Capability, curated by Lauri Firstenberg and
reviewed by Sharon
Mizota in the Los Angeles Times. This
exhibition was also
heralded by Catherine Taft in Saatchi Online
magazine as one of
the top 10 shows in Los Angeles. Barrie
completed his first solo
Museum project, Mirror House, in the fall of
2011 for the Santa
Monica Museum of Art, which was reviewed in
the Los Angeles
Times by Leah Ollman as well as featured in the
September
edition of Art Practical, Berkeley, CA. In 2011
Mirror
House was acquired by the Albright Knox Gallery in
Buffalo, NY
and included in their new acquisitions exhibition
Surveyor curated by Heather Pesanti. Barrie's photo-drawings
have also
been included in the 2008 California Biennial, as well
as
exhibited internationally in Arte Portugal 2010 and the
2008
